Week 6 - Fremantle Excursion

On Wednesday 26^th of May, Room 19, 12 and 16 embarked on an exciting excursion to Fremantle. Our first stop was the Fremantle Prison, where students saw first-hand where convicts served their sentences. After an informative tour, we made our way down the road to the Round House where we learnt that it is the first permanent building built in the Swan River Colony. After this, we were treated to a delicious fish and chips lunch catered by Cicerello’s. Our next stop was back to the Round House to listen to the cannon being fired at 1pm. The final stop of the day was the WA Shipwrecks Museum. Students explored all the fascinating artefacts on display including one-seventh of a restored ship. Overall, we had an awesome day learning about the history of our state. We would like to extend a very special thank you to the parent volunteers and the education assistant for accompanying us on our excursion.

Design and Technologies - House Projects

In Terms 1 and 2, we have been learning about how houses are built to withstand different natural disasters. This week students were asked to research, plan and design a house, which could withstand the effects of a natural disaster chosen by each student.

On Tuesday the 25^th May, students will be constructing this house. This week students were sent home with an individual list of materials and tools they require to build their house. I kindly ask that parents provide students with these or similar materials and tools, so they are able to build their house.

Super Scientist Presentations

This term we will be conducting our Super Scientist Presentations. We encourage the students to perform an actual, physical experiment or demonstration using equipment. It can be based on any science topic they are interested in researching and learning about.

The presentation is to be a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 minutes. Students can use a PowerPoint for their presentation and they should be able to give information about the science behind their experiment. The students have been informed of this as well.

Please be reminded that the children are encouraged to take responsibility for their presentations and must come prepared and ready to present on their allocated day. 

IMPORTANT DUE DATES:

• Title of the investigation/experiment to Mrs McBride by Monday, 17^th May – Week 5

(No spelling or mental maths homework in Week 5 as students will be focusing on their presentations.)

• Class presentations to be held in the week commencing Monday 24th May – Week 6

Year Level Challenge and Merit Award Winners

A fantastic effort from Sophie, Amber and Masih for being in the Top 5 of the Year 4 Year Level Challenge in Term 1. Well deserved!

 

Congratulations to Jye, Ataya, Shanuel and Ella for receiving a Merit Award at the assembly. We are very grateful to have such kind, hardworking and generous students in our class. Keep up the wonderful work!

Term 2 Week 1 - ANZAC Day

 In Week 1, Room 19 commemorated ANZAC Day and honoured those who had served or are serving our country. We took part in many activities which gave students the opportunity to talk about the importance of the ANZACs and the significant roles service men and women of our nations have now and had during the war.

 

Room 19 wrote ANZAC poems with a focus on using figurative language. Students did a wonderful job describing the sounds heard during the war in Gallipoli, through the use of onomatopoeia, similes and metaphors.

 

We also joined our buddy class to create an ANZAC soldier silhouette artwork. This was a wonderful activity for Room 19 to guide their Year 1 and Year 2 buddies to use their fine motor skills to tear coloured paper to create the background for the silhouette. Miss Marinan and I were very proud of how well both classes worked together.

 

We also created our wreath for the ANZAC ceremony. Thank you very much to parents for bringing in flowers. It turned out beautifully and it was all due to your kind donations.

 

Thank you to Sophie and Maddison for laying our wreath with our buddy class. You did a great job girls!

Term 2 Week 1 – What is your favourite thing about Easter?

Ella’s Response:

“My favourite thing about Easter is that I had an Easter egg hunt, and my Aunty comes over from Queensland to have breakfast with us.”

 

Asha’s response:

“My favourite thing about Easter is that I get to do an Easter egg hunt. This is more fun than waking up with them in my basket already.”

 

Amber’s response:

“My favourite thing about Easter was finding a surprise gift in my tent. My mum told me to clean it out and when I came back, I found a Unicorn Beanie-boo. It was better than getting chocolate.”

Drop Everything and Talk

 Week 8 – If you had your own motto (for life), what would it be?

 

Ataya’s Response:

“My life motto is ‘The ball is in your court’ which means you make your own decisions about how to live your life and you are responsible for your actions. The ball is the decisions or actions, and the court is you.”

 

Drasika’s response:

“My life motto is ‘One hand is for helping yourself and the other one is for helping others’. This means to not be greedy by using two hands for just yourself but using one hand to help someone else.”

 

Suha’s response:

“My motto would be ‘If you believe in yourself you can achieve anything’ which means if you trust yourself and what you can do, you can make anything happen.”

Week 7 - Harmony Day

 Buddy Class activity:

Room 19 were so excited to meet and get to know their Year 1 and Year 2 buddies for the first time. I could not think of a better celebration to do that with than to join together to commemorate Harmony Day.

 

Room 19 did an awesome job in welcoming and getting to know their buddies. Both myself and Miss Marinan were very impressed with how well they took on the responsibility of guiding and assisting their buddies in the completion of their Harmony Hand Tree. We can’t wait to meet up with Room 34 again.

Thank you to those students who dressed up for Harmony Day. You all looked fabulous, and it was a fantastic way to celebrate the many cultures we have in our class.

Drop Everything and Talk

Each week the students will be participating in ‘Drop everything and Talk’. This is a speaking and listening task that encourages students to share their ideas while developing their presentation and listening skills. Here are a few responses from this week’s Drop Everything and Talk.

 

The topic for Week 6 was, ‘What is your biggest dream that you wish would come true?’

 

Drasika: “My biggest dream that I want to come true is to become a famous singer because then I can give lots of autographs and will be really famous for doing something I love.”

 

Jye: “My biggest dream that I want to come true is to have a GT when I’m older because my dad likes old cars, and he says he wants me to have an old car like him. He told me I better start saving up and put some money in the bank”

 

Anjana: “My biggest dream I want to come true is to study really hard in high school so I can go to university because I want to give my parents a good life when they are older. I want to do this as they have given me an amazing life.”

Room 12, 16 and 19’s Figurative Language Assembly

Congratulations Room 19 on a fantastic assembly item! 

 

It was a wonderful way to learn about all the different types of figurative language we can use to make our writing more interesting. 

 

Thank you, parents, for ensuring your child came appropriately dressed for our assembly. Well done to those students who remembered their lines and thought on the spot when required, you should be proud of yourselves. I am very proud of the figurative language acrostic poems you wrote using similes and metaphors to describe your chosen topic.

Speaking & Listening Task – Term 1

All students will need to present a 2-5 minute presentation on the topic: What makes me special?

Presentations will be held in Week 5 and may be in the form of a power point or poster, and palm cards are encouraged. This will mean in Week 4 there is no Spelling or Mental Maths homework.

Assembly – Friday 5th March 2021

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

On Friday 5^th March from 8:50am, Room’s 12, 16 and 19 will be hosting the Senior Assembly in the undercover area.

As part of our assembly item we would like all students to dress in hip hop/funky clothing, as we will be performing a figurative language rap song. We will be practising in class and a copy of the lyrics can be found here.

Students will need to bring their school uniform to change into after the assembly.

Student Councillors for Semester One

Congratulations to Maddison and Sophie, our new Student Councillors for Semester One. We have no doubt you will take on the responsibility of Student Councillor with enthusiasm, respect and dedication. We are grateful to have you represent Room 19.

Bushfire Fundraiser

Congratulations to the students and families of WGPS for raising over $1600 in our 'Aussie Day' fundraiser. The money raised will be donated to the Bushfire Appeal.

Welcome Year Fours!

Welcome to Room 19’s blog.

 

While the school year had an unpredictable start, we have had a fantastic start to 2021. Primarily, the first couple of weeks are about setting standards, establishing routines and revision of previous concepts and skills. It is very pleasing to see so many students completing the ‘Motivational Work’ at home and to see their eagerness to start Literacy Pro. All students have now completed a Literacy Pro Test and are ready to begin reading books and completing quizzes at their Lexile Level. The link for Literacy Pro can be found under the ‘Extra online activities and resources’ tab above.

 

I will be updating the blog regularly to keep you updated on what we are doing in class as well as any upcoming events or information you need. I am looking forward to the exciting year ahead and seeing each student achieve their goals. If you have any questions, please come and see me.
